And if you're wondering, my pirate team sunk our opponents, the ninjas! It was a good battle, made even better by being wordily victorious.
Last year I headed the villain team and also won. I'm sensing I might belong to the dark side.
Just over my head, where I do most of my writing from my comfy chair, is this cabinet. Inside are so many treasures, like a stack of packages of blank notecards I got for a penny each at a office store sale years ago and seem to be saving for...something. It also houses some of my super old writing that we don't talk about or look at but also can't throw away, a large stash of cassettes from the late 80s and early 90s that I also refuse to part with, and various craft supplies.
One of those crafts is book art, in which I, in one of my many spurts of random craftiness a few years ago, decided to try. I needed something to fill the open spaces in my cabinet and this seemed like the perfect solution. It also mostly hides all the stuff spilling off the shelves behind them. Functional and nice to look at.
Have you ever watched Farscape? No? What's wrong with you? It's one of my favorite shows of the old sci-fi channel, back before they went wonky with a y and focused on stuff like Sharknado. Just. No.
While I love all the characters of that show, Scorpius was my favorite, in all his incarnations. He was a very interesting antagonist and well-rounded. Creepy at times, evil a lot, but also with a compelling backstory. And then we get into the imaginary versions of him. Good times. Now I'm going to have the urge to watch that series again. Darn it, I don't have time for that!
I did a post five years ago on how to make these book page roses. I'd made a bunch of them as an auction item for a NaNo fundraiser. They turned out really nice so I'd also made some for myself. Because I totally need more crafty things hanging around in my writing space to distract me. Remember that time you made roses, they whisper to me. That was fun, what else could you make? You've got a bunch of pages still sitting around in a book somewhere. You should do something with them. Come on.
Evil, taunting craft things. What, you can't hear them too?
Stop and hear the roses wasn't a thing? I swear it was.
One of my long-time favorite crafty things to do is paint. I painted this gargoyle twenty-some years ago. Egads, has it really been that long? (See, lose track of years just as quickly as months.)
So, as it turns out, one of the worst places a distractedly crafty person can ever work is a craft store. I did. For several years. Oh and several glorious years they were, except for dealing with people (both customers and co-workers), it was heavenly!
You know where you should never put me? In charge of ordering the ceramics and telling me I can paint the display pieces and keep them later. But we had a great selection of gargoyles, fairies, castles, wizards, and pretty much anything fantasy-oriented in the catalogue. There are days I miss that job, but the store closed and it was onward to other things for me.
Wow, I remember Farscape. Never really watched it properly, I don't often sit down and watch TV, but I enjoyed what I saw of it.
ReplyDeleteI don't either anymore, but when it was airing, I sure did. I have a VHS from one of the first collector kits (it also provided one of those areas of interest where my husband knew exactly what to get me for Christmas for several years in a row), that talks about filming the pilot episode. The best part is the actors talking about the open interpretation of 'making alien noises'. That's always in my head when I make vague descriptions while writing.
DeleteThose roses are lovely! I wouldn't handle working at a craft store well myself. Very little writing would get done, I think.
ReplyDeleteYes, a large portion of my creative energy went to all the crafty things for several years while I worked there. It was great fun, but not productive at all in terms of writing.
DeleteYour workspace is awesome! I loved Farscape. I have all the episodes on DVD now. Have you watched the Curious Creations of Christine McConnell on Netflix? I think your dark side would thoroughly enjoy it. :)
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check that out! I have them on DVD too (another excellent Christmas gift).
DeleteYour workspace is much neater and nicer than mine. And kudos to you for keeping your toys in the package. I have to take them out and play with them. :-P
ReplyDeleteI just happen to be between crafty projects at the moment so my desk is relatively clean. ;)
DeleteAs the one who does the cleaning, I find leaving the toys in the package makes them much easier to dust (you know, when I get around to that sorta bi-annually - you may note the rectangle of clean next to the gargoyle where I moved a candle a few weeks ago).
I watched Farscape way back when. Loved it. Nice to meet another fan. :-)

Yay! Welcome! Glad you dropped by. :)
DeleteOh, yeah, I watched Farscape, the whole series. And I was very happy when a couple of them moved over to the last couple of season of SG-1 when Farscape got cancelled.
ReplyDeleteI was also super excited about their move after the cancellation but I couldn't get into SG-1, even with them there. Which is odd, because I've really liked all the other Stargate series and the original movie.
DeleteCool crafts!
ReplyDeleteLove the dragon and roses! The idea with the pirates vs. ninjas is nice too. Great way to get that inspiration into gear.
ReplyDeleteYay for crafty things! I'm trying to convince myself I don't need a guest room, so I can get rid of the bed and make it a craft room, far, far from my writing space. My crafts are mostly photo related, but my daughter could use a sewing room, too.
ReplyDeleteI wish I was into something crafty, sometimes. But I write, so I guess that's something! Thanks for the tour of your space!
ReplyDeleteI binge-watched Fascape when we had Prime, never saw it before and really enjoyed it. For my granddaughter's 9th (I think) birthday, she & her friends made fairy houses with book art. Really clever. Your November boggles my mind. Too much! LOL Slow down a bit, girl. Enjoy December.
ReplyDeleteYour November was really something! I did my own personal NaNo by writing my Christmas Ghost Story in four weeks. Ouch! Your workspace is neat, while mine resembles a landfill! :-)
ReplyDeleteI remember Farscape! It even recently returned to mind when my husband and I were watching all the available seasons of Doctor Who and saw an actor playing marshal for an old west town. Took us a moment, but then we realized it was Ben Browder who we associated with Farscape.
ReplyDeleteI like your crafts! They're inspiring and giving me ideas...
